Submission Hints and Tips

Last time we looked at Question 2 Business Planning parts a & b.  Let's finish off Question 2 with parts c & d.

c) Describe the risk issues you have identified for your business and sumarise the risk mitigation strategies you have put in place*.

Risk means more than just Occupational Health & Safety.  Consider environmental factors such as flood, fire etc.  Also think about, fraud, theft, loss of key personnel, not enough insurance, health of the business owner etc.

We have attached another great tip sheet for you on this topic Tips on answering Risk Management Tips on answering Risk Management 85.23 Kb

Note that this question asks to describe the risk issues and summarise the strategies. It would be great if you can give each risk a ranking e.g. High, Medium, Low or Level 1 - 10.

d) Demonstrate your involvement in, and contribution to, the tourism industry.  Explain how it contributes to the success of your business and the tourism industry as a whole*.

Note this is a two-part question and you must ensure you answer both parts fully.  However, you could almost look at it as four parts, be sure you cover:

  • Your involvement in the tourism industry
  • Your contribution to the tourism industry
  • How it (your involvement and contribution) contributes to the success of your business
  • How it (your involvement and contribution) contributes to the tourism industry as a whole.
  • Your involvement in, and contribution to, the tourism industry could include tourism relevant Board and Association memberships, mentoring, attendance at tradeshows and events.  You can show detail on your involvement at meetings e.g. what were some of the outcomes of initiatives you drove.  If mentoring show examples of contributions e.g. which operators sought assistance and advice and how did you help them.  If attending tradeshows and events list them and show any measureable results e.g. how many bookings did you get from each event.  If hosting tradeshows or events show how many visitors they brought.  Highlight personal contributions and show measurable benefits.

Once you have listed all your involvement and contribution you must tell the judges how that benefited your business and the tourism industry.  Judges are looking for you to give back to the industry as well as participate in it.  Initiatives could be enhanced through showing measurable outcomes e.g. what is the value of economic contribution by your activities.

Some other tips for all your questions:

  • If possible, try and start each question on a new page
  • Always write out the question first and then start your answer
  • When using acronyms please write it in full first with the acronym in brackets, you can then use the acronym only from then on (don't assume all judges know your particular industry 'language')
  • Measure your outcomes and quantify your statements - you need to be able to back up what you say!

*We have used Category 2 Tourist Attractions as the basis for these example questions.  Your particular category questions may vary so please ensure you read them carefully.

Mentoring

Limited places for one hour of free mentoring per entrant/submission is available to entrants of the NSW Tourism Awards who have nominated and paid their entry fee by July 23, 2010.

Write your submission and get it to a place where you're reasonably happy with it.  Then email it to Shan Lawson at awards@ticnsw.com.au .  If the file is too large to send using regular email visit www.yousendit.com to upload to a secure website.

A mentor will read your submission and provide you with written feedback.  They'll then follow up with a phone call to discuss.  This sort of one-on-one advice will really help you sharpen your awards submission.
